Staying safe on a boat

If you’re set to visit a friend on his or her boat, or are looking to go sailing, there are a few things you should know, especially if you’re not a strong swimmer or are a bit nervous about the boating adventure.

To stay safe on a boat you have to think before you act at all times. Let’s say you’re spending a day moving along the river and going through boat locks, you should only get out when it’s safe to do so. You may not be asked to help with the lines. But if you are, be careful when they are dropped and don’t let them hit you in the face. If the boat isn’t steady this can happen.

You should also keep away from the edges of the boat and avoid walking along the side when the boat is moving. So long as you only get on and off the boat when it is stationary, you’ll be a lot safer. The main thing is to stay calm wherever you are and even if you feel panic coming over you, just breath and think before you act.
