Safety Equipment for your Canal Boat

When you have a canal boat, it’s easy to think that you’ll never run into any problems, but even on the smooth British river,  water and weather conditions can change fast, so you’ll need to make sure you have the following:

  • Radar reflector
  • Lifesaving signals
  • Navigation lights, day shapes & sound signaling equipment

These are all compulsory items, so that doesn’t include recommended safety gear such as:

  • A lifejacket (or buoyancy aid^) for everyone on board
  • Safety harnesses
  • Kill cord & spare
  • Maritime Radio (e.g.VHF)

If you care for the safety of others you’ll make sure your canal boat is fully equipped, but you also need to carry out regular checks to make sure there is absolutely no damage or wear and tear that could be potentially dangerous. Equipment and ongoing checks go hand in hand in the safety of boating.
